There is a new Hannah Swenson Mystery premiering on Sunday called Sugar & Vice. However, Sleuthers are still wondering why Cameron Mathison is not back in the mystery series that was originally called Murder She Baked.
Anyone who has ever read the Murder She Baked cozy mystery series by Joanne Fluke know how complicated Hannah’s love life is. There was some of Hannah’s messy love life in the movies. The biggest mess was the infamous love triangle between dentist Norman (Gabriel Hogan), Hannah (Alison Sweeney), and Detective Mike Kingston (Cameron Mathison).
Despite Delores’ (Barbara Niven) best efforts to push her single daughter towards the eligible dentist, Hannah and Mike wound up together. They were even engaged for a while. However, that engagement was broken, and suddenly Mike is no longer in the small Minnesota community.
Now Sluethers wonder why Cameron Mathison isn’t still in the Hallmark mystery series?
Why Isn’t Cameron Mathison In New Episodes Of ‘Hannah Swensen Mysteries’?
A few years ago, Hallmark’s Murder She Baked mystery series returned from an extended pause and returned as Hannah Swensen Mysteries. Although there were a few changes, Alison Sweeney was back as the owner of The Cookie Jar, Cameron Mathison was back as Detective Mike Kingston, and Barbara Niven returned as the elegant and confident Delores Swensen. Gabriel Hogan was back on and off as Norman, the dentist.
However, it has been a few movies now that Cameron has not returned to the series. What happened?
Late in 2023, Mathison signed an exclusive contract with Great American Family. Since then, he has starred in a cornucopia of movies with former Hallmark star Candace Cameron Bure.
Therefore, he is not coming back to the series in the foreseeable future. Cameron Mathison is working for GAF.
How Hallmark Explained Mike Kingston’s Absence From ‘Hannah Swensen’
Now that Cameron Mathison chose to leave Hallmark, it became a huge decision on how to proceed. As Alison Sweeney explained to TVLIne, they chose to have Mike train with the FBI at Quantico. This way, they could continue the series and have a solid explanation about Detective Mike Kingston’s absence.
However, Ali’s Days Of Our Lives background also played a role in why they chose to keep his character going off screen.
That was the decision we made for Mike because I come from a soaps background and I love the philosophy of ‘never say never,’ so you never know where Mike will turn up next.
Although she did not go into details about Cameron signing an exclusive with the competition, she diplomatically shared, “I love Cameron, and I wish him all the best, but he decided to pursue a different career path.”
